Best Angel Commanders in MTG

Angel decks can take over the air with large creatures, lifelink and a battlefield that’s difficult to attack into. Getting there is the challenge. Many Angels cost a lot of mana, so your commander needs to help the deck get started, protect its creatures or make each Angel worth the investment.

Choose what your Angel deck needs most

Our picks cover different ways to build the theme. They are editorial recommendations, not a popularity or win-rate ranking.

  • Beginner-friendly A clear plan with few decisions per turn
  • Budget-friendly The commander is inexpensive and the deck works without pricey staples
  • High power Among the strongest versions of the theme
Giada, Font of Hope — Magic: The Gathering card

Giada, Font of Hope — start early and scale with the army

Color identity: WhiteComplexity: LowBeginner-friendlyBudget-friendly

Giada costs two mana, provides white mana for Angel spells and gives your other Angels extra +1/+1 counters as they enter based on the Angels you already control. She is a clear starting point for a focused mono-white Angel deck. Keep room for card draw so the early acceleration doesn’t simply empty your hand.

Strengths

  • A two-mana flyer with vigilance
  • Other Angels enter with extra counters, and she makes mana for Angels
  • Mono-white and cheap

Watch out for

  • Needs many Angels to pay off
  • A 2/2 body dies easily

Best for: Newcomers who want to start with Angels early.

Lyra Dawnbringer — Magic: The Gathering card

Lyra Dawnbringer — make your Angels better in combat

Color identity: WhiteComplexity: LowBeginner-friendlyBudget-friendly

Lyra gives your other Angels +1/+1 and lifelink, while bringing a capable flying body herself. Choose her when you want combat and life gain to work together. She strengthens the army you build, but doesn’t reduce its costs or refill your hand.

Strengths

  • A 5/5 with flying, first strike and lifelink for five mana
  • Other Angels get +1/+1 and lifelink
  • Dominates combat

Watch out for

  • Mono-white has little card draw
  • All the value sits in one creature

Best for: Newcomers who want a big flyer that wins combat.

Shalai, Voice of Plenty — Magic: The Gathering card

Shalai, Voice of Plenty — protect the setup

Color identity: White, GreenComplexity: LowBudget-friendly

Shalai gives you, your planeswalkers and your other creatures hexproof. She doesn’t give herself hexproof. Green adds land-based ramp, and her activated ability can put counters on your creatures. She supports an Angel-heavy deck without requiring every creature to be an Angel.

Strengths

  • Gives you, your planeswalkers and other creatures hexproof
  • A 3/4 flyer for four mana
  • {4}{G}{G} puts a counter on each creature

Watch out for

  • Shalai herself isn’t protected
  • Doesn’t win the game on her own

Best for: Players who like to protect a board and play a patient game.

Liesa, Shroud of Dusk — Magic: The Gathering card

Liesa, Shroud of Dusk — add pressure through life loss

Color identity: White, BlackComplexity: MediumBudget-friendly

Liesa makes players lose life when they cast spells and lets you pay life rather than mana for the additional commander tax. Her pressure also affects you. She fits Angels with a life-gain or attrition plan, but can draw attention quickly in a multiplayer game.

Strengths

  • Pay life instead of mana for commander tax
  • A 5/5 with flying and lifelink
  • Every spell, yours included, costs its caster 2 life

Watch out for

  • It hurts you too
  • Five mana in two colors

Best for: Players who like pressure and a high-stakes table.

Sigarda, Font of Blessings — Magic: The Gathering card

Sigarda, Font of Blessings — protect and use the top of your library

Color identity: White, GreenComplexity: MediumBudget-friendly

Sigarda gives your other permanents hexproof and lets you cast Angel and Human spells from the top of your library. That’s useful when you want a broader creature package. Lands and other cards can stop the run of castable creatures, so don’t assume the ability will always supply the next Angel.

Strengths

  • Gives all other permanents you control hexproof
  • Casts Angels and Humans from the top of your library
  • A 4/4 flyer for four mana

Watch out for

  • Green for the protection
  • Casting from the top depends on the library

Best for: Players who like protection and extra card advantage.

Leave room below the expensive flyers

Starnheim Aspirant reduces the cost of your Angel spells. Herald's Horn, choosing Angel, can reduce creature spell costs and provide conditional card advantage in your upkeep. Both fit all five commanders. They help in different ways, and neither removes the need for enough lands and early plays.

For a focused first deck, Giada offers a low-cost commander with a direct reward for playing Angels. With a smaller budget, prioritize a functioning curve before chasing every high-cost Angel. A creature you can cast on time is often more useful than a spectacular card stuck in your hand.

Angel Commander FAQ

Does an Angel commander require an all-Angel deck?

No. Useful support creatures can fill gaps in mana and card draw. Giada rewards a higher Angel count more directly than commanders with broader abilities.

Can I add green cards to Shalai’s deck?

Yes. Shalai, Voice of Plenty has green-white color identity because of the green mana symbols in her activated ability, even though her casting cost is white.

Does lifelink make the deck safe from commander damage?

No. Life gain doesn’t remove combat damage already recorded from a particular commander. Keep interaction and protection alongside your life-gain cards.
