How does a Vampire deck work in Commander?
Vampires are a black creature type with strong support in red and white. A Vampire deck usually follows one of three plans, and the commander decides which: aggro with tokens and pump (Edgar), lifegain and drain (Vito, Astarion), or sacrifice (Elenda, Clavileño, Carmen).
How a Vampire deck wins
- Wide attacks. Tokens, lords and first strike from Stromkirk Captain overwhelm blockers.
- Drain. Sanctum Seeker drains each opponent whenever a Vampire attacks.
- Lifegain combos. Exquisite Blood with Sanguine Bond or Vito drains a player out.
The card types a Vampire deck needs
- Lords: Captivating Vampire, Stromkirk Captain and Vanquisher’s Banner make every Vampire bigger.
- Token makers: Bloodline Keeper, and commanders like Edgar.
- Drain and lifegain: Sanctum Seeker, Falkenrath Noble, lifelink Vampires.
- Card draw: Vanquisher’s Banner draws for every Vampire spell; black draw spells fill the rest.
Strengths and weaknesses
Vampire decks are aggressive and resilient at once: they drain while they attack and gain life while they do it. Their weak points are the usual typal ones — board wipes against the tokens, and fewer card-draw options in red and white.
Common mistakes
- Mixing all three plans. Pick aggro, lifegain or sacrifice and build for it.
- Too few Vampires for the lords. 25 to 30 Vampires keep the payoffs working.
- No reach. A drain plan needs a way to finish when attacks stall.
Who enjoys Vampires?
Players who like aggressive decks with staying power, and a strong flavor. Edgar is one of the easiest commanders to learn; Vito and Olivia reward experience.
