Best Lifegain Commanders in MTG

A high life total buys time. It doesn’t automatically win a Commander game. A good Lifegain deck turns those extra points into something the table must answer: a large attacker, a board full of counters or repeated life loss. Choose that payoff before you fill the deck with ways to gain life.

What should your life gain accomplish?

Our picks cover different ways to build the theme. They are editorial recommendations, not a popularity or win-rate ranking.

  • Beginner-friendly A clear plan with few decisions per turn
  • Budget-friendly The commander is inexpensive and the deck works without pricey staples
  • High power Among the strongest versions of the theme
Oloro, Ageless Ascetic — Magic: The Gathering card

Oloro, Ageless Ascetic — a steady source of life

Color identity: White, Blue, BlackComplexity: Medium

Oloro gains you life in your upkeep even while it stays in the command zone. Its card-draw and opponent-life-loss ability, however, requires Oloro on the battlefield. Choose it for a slower game with plenty of interaction, but include a finish rather than relying on the life total alone.

Strengths

  • Gains 2 life each upkeep, even from the command zone
  • Pay {1} when you gain life to draw a card and drain 1
  • Turns a slow lifegain deck into inevitability

Watch out for

  • Six mana and three colors
  • Does little on the turn it lands

Best for: Control players who like inevitability.

Karlov of the Ghost Council — Magic: The Gathering card

Karlov of the Ghost Council — reward frequent life gain

Color identity: White, BlackComplexity: MediumHigh power

Karlov gets two +1/+1 counters each time you gain life and can spend six counters, plus mana, to exile a creature. Several small life-gaining events can therefore matter more than one large event. He can threaten combat while keeping a relevant answer available.

Strengths

  • Two mana in two colors, and it grows with every life gain
  • Can exile a creature after six counters
  • Fast to cast, fast to grow

Watch out for

  • A 2/2 dies easily early on
  • Needs frequent life gain

Best for: Players who want a threat that scales quickly with lifegain.

Lathiel, the Bounteous Dawn — Magic: The Gathering card

Lathiel, the Bounteous Dawn — grow the rest of your board

Color identity: White, GreenComplexity: LowBeginner-friendlyBudget-friendly

At the beginning of each end step, Lathiel can distribute counters among other creatures based on life you’ve gained that turn. This rewards gaining life outside your own turn too. You need creatures to receive the counters; Lathiel doesn’t put them on itself with this ability.

Strengths

  • Lifelink, and its counters spread across your board at end step
  • Two colors and cheap
  • Works with counters and flyers

Watch out for

  • A 2/2 for four mana
  • Needs life gained that turn to give counters

Best for: Newcomers who like simple counters and lifelink.

Heliod, Sun-Crowned — Magic: The Gathering card

Heliod, Sun-Crowned — turn life gain into counters

Color identity: WhiteComplexity: HighHigh power

Heliod puts a +1/+1 counter on a target creature or enchantment you control whenever you gain life, and can grant lifelink to another creature. He supports a compact mono-white plan. Decide with your group whether you’re building for ordinary combat or including combo lines.

Strengths

  • Three mana, indestructible, and it gives lifelink to others
  • Every life gain puts a +1/+1 counter on a creature or enchantment
  • An enchantment that dodges creature removal

Watch out for

  • Does little without life gain
  • Pairs with lifelink pingers for combo wins, so agree on that with your table

Best for: Experienced players who like a compact, powerful engine.

Dina, Soul Steeper — Magic: The Gathering card

Dina, Soul Steeper — make each life-gaining event cost your opponents

Color identity: Black, GreenComplexity: LowBeginner-friendlyBudget-friendly

Whenever you gain life, Dina makes each opponent lose one life. The amount you gained doesn’t increase that loss. She suits a deck built around repeated small events, with sacrifice as another useful angle. Going from one life to twenty-one is still just one trigger if it happens as one event.

Strengths

  • Two mana, and every life gain drains each opponent for 1
  • A sacrifice outlet that grows Dina
  • Cheap in two colors

Watch out for

  • A 1/3 body doesn’t win fights
  • The drain is small unless you gain life often

Best for: Newcomers who want a cheap commander with a clear payoff.

Balance life gain with ways to use it

Soul Warden supplies repeated life gain when other creatures enter, but needs white in your commander’s identity. Essence Warden provides a similar role in green and fits Lathiel or Dina. Choose sources that support the rest of the deck rather than adding isolated spells that only raise your life total.

Keep room for removal and a finish. Extra life can help you survive combat, but commander damage and poison don’t care how high that number gets.

Lifegain Commander FAQ

Does gaining ten life trigger Karlov ten times?

No. A single event of gaining ten life triggers Karlov once. Ten separate life-gaining events trigger it ten times.

Does lifelink need combat damage?

No. Damage from a source with lifelink can gain life outside combat too. The damage must actually be dealt.

Does gaining life reset commander damage?

No. Combat damage from each individual commander is tracked separately. Gaining life doesn’t erase it; 21 combat damage from the same commander still causes a player to lose.
