Best Sliver Commanders in MTG

One Sliver supplies flying. Another supplies mana. A third makes the whole army harder to stop. Sliver decks build strength by combining abilities across the group. Your commander determines whether you find the right piece, protect the board or keep adding creatures until opponents run out of answers.

Which five-color Sliver commander fits your plan?

Our picks cover different ways to build the theme. They are editorial recommendations, not a popularity or win-rate ranking.

  • Beginner-friendly A clear plan with few decisions per turn
  • Budget-friendly The commander is inexpensive and the deck works without pricey staples
  • High power Among the strongest versions of the theme
The First Sliver — Magic: The Gathering card

The First Sliver — build momentum with cascade

Color identity: White, Blue, Black, Red, GreenComplexity: MediumHigh power

The First Sliver has cascade and gives your Sliver spells cascade while it’s on the battlefield. Casting Slivers can therefore lead to more spells. Pay attention to the mana curve, and remember that putting a Sliver directly onto the battlefield doesn’t trigger cascade.

Strengths

  • Every Sliver spell you cast has cascade
  • A 7/7 for five mana
  • Free value from every cast

Watch out for

  • Needs all five colors on turn five
  • Cascade can hit any spell, not only Slivers

Best for: Players who like random chains and big casts.

Sliver Overlord — Magic: The Gathering card

Sliver Overlord — search for the piece you need

Color identity: White, Blue, Black, Red, GreenComplexity: MediumHigh power

Overlord can search your library for a Sliver card and put it into your hand for three mana. It rewards knowing which Sliver solves the current problem. This is a toolbox commander: reliable access to the right card is its attraction, but you still need mana to cast what you find.

Strengths

  • {3}: tutor any Sliver to your hand
  • {3}: steal a Sliver for good
  • Works with almost any Sliver build

Watch out for

  • Both abilities cost mana every time
  • Five colors

Best for: Players who want a flexible, mana-hungry commander.

Sliver Hivelord — Magic: The Gathering card

Sliver Hivelord — protect against destruction

Color identity: White, Blue, Black, Red, GreenComplexity: Low

Hivelord gives Sliver creatures you control indestructible. That helps against many combat situations and destroy effects. It doesn’t stop exile, sacrifice or a creature going to the graveyard for having zero toughness. Protection is the commander’s job; card draw must come from elsewhere.

Strengths

  • Slivers are indestructible
  • A 5/5 body
  • A plan that is easy to follow

Watch out for

  • Exile, bounce and −X/−X still work
  • Five colors

Best for: Players who want a sturdy Sliver board.

Sliver Gravemother — Magic: The Gathering card

Sliver Gravemother — use the graveyard for another attack

Color identity: White, Blue, Black, Red, GreenComplexity: High

Gravemother gives Sliver creature cards in your graveyard encore and suspends the legend rule for your Slivers. Encore creates temporary token copies for your opponents, giving fallen Slivers another role. This asks you to manage the graveyard as well as the battlefield, and makes graveyard exile a meaningful weakness.

Strengths

  • The legend rule doesn’t apply to Slivers, so every legendary Sliver can stay
  • Dead Slivers come back with encore
  • Strong in long games

Watch out for

  • Six mana and five colors
  • Needs a full graveyard

Best for: Players who like long games and recursion.

Sliver Legion — Magic: The Gathering card

Sliver Legion — make a crowded board lethal

Color identity: White, Blue, Black, Red, GreenComplexity: Low

Legion gives Slivers a large power and toughness bonus based on the number of other Slivers on the battlefield. Its ability affects all Slivers, not just yours. It is a clear combat finisher, but neither finds cards nor rebuilds the army after a board wipe.

Strengths

  • Every other Sliver gives all Slivers +1/+1
  • A 7/7 for five mana
  • A simple plan: go wide

Watch out for

  • Dies to a sweeper when the board is wide
  • Five colors

Best for: Players who like a big, simple board.

Build the mana base before the wish list

All five options above need access to all five colors. Decide how your early turns produce that mana before choosing the rest of the swarm. Gemhide Sliver gives all Slivers a mana ability; Manaweft Sliver gives it only to Slivers you control. That distinction can matter if an opponent also has Slivers.

For a budget-conscious build, prioritize fixing and a focused selection of shared abilities. A legendary Sliver’s price isn’t a reason to include it if another card serves the deck better. You can build this theme without collecting every five-color legend.

Key cards and synergies for Slivers

Cards that show up in many Sliver decks, by the job they do. Which ones fit depends on your commander’s colors.

Mana and fixing

Five colors need help, and Slivers can provide it themselves.

  • Manaweft Sliver — Your Slivers tap for one mana of any color.
  • Gemhide Sliver — All Slivers tap for one mana of any color, yours or not.
  • Sliver Hive — A land that makes any color for Sliver spells and, later, Slivers.

Team abilities

Every Sliver you play gives the others something.

Protection and utility

Keep the team alive and turn mana into Slivers.

Sliver decks on a budget

Slivers are the least budget-friendly theme in this set: all five commanders here are five-color, and none is a budget pick. The savings come from the other 99, where many of the Slivers above are inexpensive, and from a simple mana base.

Prices change daily, so this page names none. Commandarium shows today’s price for every card in a deck, and counts what you already own.

Sliver Commander FAQ

Do all Slivers help my opponents too?

No. Some refer to “all Slivers”; others refer only to Slivers you control. Read the exact wording of each card.

Does Hivelord protect against every board wipe?

No. Indestructible prevents destruction, not exile or forced sacrifice. Effects that reduce toughness can also get around it.

Is Sliver Queen required?

No. None of these commanders needs Sliver Queen to make a functioning Sliver deck. Choose cards for your plan and budget rather than treating it as a mandatory purchase.
