Best Spellslinger Commanders in MTG

In a Spellslinger deck, a cheap spell can do much more than its text suggests. It might draw a card, make a token and trigger a damage engine on the way. The deck works when those small actions support a clear finish. Otherwise, it’s easy to cast plenty of spells without getting any closer to winning.

Five ways to build around your spells

Our picks cover different ways to build the theme. They are editorial recommendations, not a popularity or win-rate ranking.

  • Beginner-friendly A clear plan with few decisions per turn
  • Budget-friendly The commander is inexpensive and the deck works without pricey staples
  • High power Among the strongest versions of the theme
Veyran, Voice of Duality — Magic: The Gathering card

Veyran, Voice of Duality — get more from your triggers

Color identity: Blue, RedComplexity: MediumHigh powerBudget-friendly

Veyran makes relevant abilities of your permanents trigger an additional time when you cast or copy an instant or sorcery. That rewards a board of carefully chosen payoffs. Veyran doesn’t simply copy every spell; the attraction is what your other permanents do when you cast or copy them.

Strengths

  • Doubles the triggers you get from casting instants and sorceries
  • Grows with every spell, so it can become a threat itself
  • Only three mana in two colors

Watch out for

  • A 2/2 dies easily, so keep protection or counterspells handy
  • Needs enough cast-triggered cards in the other 99 to pay off

Best for: Players who like stacking triggers and watching them multiply.

Mizzix of the Izmagnus — Magic: The Gathering card

Mizzix of the Izmagnus — make bigger spells manageable

Color identity: Blue, RedComplexity: HighBudget-friendly

Mizzix uses experience counters to reduce the generic portion of your instant and sorcery costs. You still need the colored mana. Build a sensible progression of spells and protect your commander: a hand designed around discounts becomes awkward when Mizzix keeps getting removed.

Strengths

  • Spells get cheaper as experience counters pile up
  • Makes expensive and X spells castable earlier
  • Four mana in two colors

Watch out for

  • Slow early on, before the counters arrive
  • The experience math needs attention every turn

Best for: Players who like bigger spells and enjoy tracking resources.

Kykar, Wind's Fury — Magic: The Gathering card

Kykar, Wind's Fury — turn noncreature spells into resources

Color identity: White, Blue, RedComplexity: LowBeginner-friendlyBudget-friendly

Kykar makes flying Spirit tokens when you cast noncreature spells. You can keep those Spirits for combat or sacrifice them for red mana. The white cards open up different answers and protection, but the extra color asks more of your mana base.

Strengths

  • Every noncreature spell makes a 1/1 flying Spirit
  • Spirits sacrifice for red mana, so rituals come naturally
  • A flying body that also blocks well

Watch out for

  • Three colors
  • 1/1 tokens die to sweepers and pingers

Best for: Newcomers who want a deck that builds a board while casting spells.

Talrand, Sky Summoner — Magic: The Gathering card

Talrand, Sky Summoner — win with the creatures your spells make

Color identity: BlueComplexity: LowBeginner-friendlyBudget-friendly

Talrand creates a flying Drake whenever you cast an instant or sorcery. That gives your interaction a second purpose and your deck a visible route to victory. Keep enough mana available to defend Talrand rather than spending everything to make one more Drake.

Strengths

  • Every instant or sorcery makes a 2/2 flying Drake
  • Mono-blue: simple mana and cheap counterspells
  • A clear plan for four mana

Watch out for

  • Mono-blue has little removal of its own
  • Drakes die to a single sweeper

Best for: Newcomers who like blue’s cantrips and counterspells.

Niv-Mizzet, Parun — Magic: The Gathering card

Niv-Mizzet, Parun — make card draw hurt

Color identity: Blue, RedComplexity: HighHigh power

Niv-Mizzet turns your card draws into damage and draws you cards when a player casts an instant or sorcery. The payoff is powerful, but the casting cost requires three blue and three red mana. This is a choice for a deck that can support a demanding commander and defend it once it resolves.

Strengths

  • Card draw becomes damage, so drawing is a win condition
  • Flying, and it can’t be countered
  • Opponents’ instants and sorceries draw you cards

Watch out for

  • UUURRR is hard to cast without a good mana base
  • A six-mana 5/5 is an exposed target

Best for: Experienced players who like draw engines and combo finishes.

Give the spell chain an ending

Choose whether you want to win through combat, repeated damage or a specific combo before adding every attractive cantrip. Archmage Emeritus rewards casting or copying instants and sorceries with card draw. Young Pyromancer creates Elementals when you cast them. Check those words: a copied spell is not normally cast, so the two cards don’t respond to every event in the same way.

Talrand is a clear starting point for a mono-blue token plan. Veyran rewards closer attention to triggered abilities. Neither requires an infinite combo to have a coherent game plan.

Key cards and synergies for Spellslinger

Cards that show up in many Spellslinger decks, by the job they do. Which ones fit depends on your commander’s colors.

Payoffs

Creatures and enchantments that reward every instant and sorcery you cast.

  • Young Pyromancer — A 1/1 Elemental token for every instant or sorcery.
  • Murmuring Mystic — A 1/1 flying Bird Illusion for every instant or sorcery, in mono-blue.
  • Guttersnipe — Deals 2 damage to each opponent for every instant or sorcery.
  • Archmage Emeritus — Draws a card whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery.
  • Thousand-Year Storm — Copies each instant or sorcery once for every one you cast earlier that turn: a finisher.

Cost reduction and mana

Cheaper spells mean more spells in a turn.

Cheap spells

The cantrips and counterspells that fuel the engines.

  • Brainstorm — Draws three cards for one blue mana, then puts two back.
  • Ponder — Looks at three cards, lets you shuffle, and draws a card.
  • Frantic Search — Draws two, discards two and untaps up to three lands, which makes it almost free.
  • Counterspell — Two mana to stop a spell, and it wins the stack when you hold mana up.

Best budget Spellslinger commanders

Spellslinger is a cheap deck at its core: the payoff creatures and the cantrips are some of the least expensive cards in the format. Three commanders keep it that way.

Spellslinger Commander FAQ

Is Spellslinger the same as Storm?

No. Storm builds around casting many spells in one turn. A Spellslinger deck can instead play a longer game with tokens, card draw and interaction.

Does copying a spell count as casting it?

Usually not. Read whether a payoff says “cast,” “copy,” or both. Some effects specifically let you cast a copy of a card; those work differently from copying a spell on the stack.

Can I build Spellslinger without infinite combos?

Yes. Talrand’s Drakes, Kykar’s Spirits and repeated damage effects can all support a finite win condition.
