Best Reanimator Commanders in MTG

In a Reanimator deck, losing a creature doesn’t have to mean losing access to it. You fill your graveyard deliberately, then bring back the creature you need. Some commanders repeat that process over many turns. Others help you put a large threat into play before you could comfortably cast it.

Choose how your graveyard becomes a resource

Our picks cover different ways to build the theme. They are editorial recommendations, not a popularity or win-rate ranking.

  • Beginner-friendly A clear plan with few decisions per turn
  • Budget-friendly The commander is inexpensive and the deck works without pricey staples
  • High power Among the strongest versions of the theme
Meren of Clan Nel Toth — Magic: The Gathering card

Meren of Clan Nel Toth — bring creatures back every end step

Color identity: Black, GreenComplexity: MediumHigh powerBudget-friendly

Meren earns experience counters when your other creatures die. At the beginning of your end step, she returns a creature to the battlefield if its mana value is within your experience count; otherwise it goes to your hand. Cheap creatures with useful abilities give her something productive to do early.

Strengths

  • Brings a creature back at every end step
  • Creature deaths raise its experience cap
  • Two colors and four mana

Watch out for

  • Slow start: until the counters arrive it returns creatures to your hand
  • Graveyard hate shuts it off

Best for: Players who want a grindy engine that recovers from board wipes.

Karador, Ghost Chieftain — Magic: The Gathering card

Karador, Ghost Chieftain — cast creatures from the graveyard

Color identity: White, Black, GreenComplexity: LowBeginner-friendlyBudget-friendly

Creatures in your graveyard reduce Karador’s generic casting cost. During each of your turns, he also lets you cast a creature spell from there. You still pay that spell’s costs. Karador suits a toolbox of useful creatures better than a plan that assumes every large threat will return for free.

Strengths

  • Costs less for every creature card in your graveyard
  • Casts a creature from your graveyard once each turn, like a second hand
  • A forgiving, value-first plan

Watch out for

  • You still pay mana costs, so it is not instant reanimation
  • Three colors and a slow first turns

Best for: Newcomers who like value more than combos.

Chainer, Nightmare Adept — Magic: The Gathering card

Chainer, Nightmare Adept — trade a card for another chance

Color identity: Black, RedComplexity: MediumBudget-friendly

Chainer lets you discard a card to gain permission to cast a creature spell from your graveyard that turn, once each turn. He also gives haste to relevant creatures that didn’t enter from your hand. That makes him appealing for aggressive graveyard decks, provided you leave mana to actually cast the creatures.

Strengths

  • Turns spare cards into creature casts from the graveyard
  • Reanimated creatures can attack right away
  • Two colors and four mana

Watch out for

  • Casting costs mana, so nothing is free
  • Discarding a card every turn costs you resources

Best for: Players who like discard synergies and an aggressive plan.

Sefris of the Hidden Ways — Magic: The Gathering card

Sefris of the Hidden Ways — reanimate through dungeons

Color identity: White, Blue, BlackComplexity: High

Sefris ventures when creature cards go to your graveyard, at most once each turn, and returns a creature when you complete a dungeon. Discard outlets and actions on opponents' turns help the engine. Choose Sefris if you enjoy sequencing several moving parts rather than resolving one large reanimation spell.

Strengths

  • Ventures into the dungeon whenever creatures reach the graveyard
  • Completing a dungeon returns a creature to the battlefield
  • Only three mana

Watch out for

  • Dungeons take several rooms, so the deck needs a steady supply of creatures in the graveyard
  • Dungeon rules add complexity

Best for: Players who enjoy unusual engines and like to plan ahead.

Muldrotha, the Gravetide — Magic: The Gathering card

Muldrotha, the Gravetide — rebuild more than your creatures

Color identity: Blue, Black, GreenComplexity: MediumBudget-friendly

Muldrotha lets you play a land and cast a permanent spell of each permanent type from your graveyard during each of your turns. Timing rules and costs still apply. This is broader graveyard value rather than pure Reanimator, and works best when your answers and resources come on permanents.

Strengths

  • Plays a land and each permanent type from the graveyard every turn
  • Rewards self-mill and long games
  • Hard to run out of cards

Watch out for

  • Six mana and three colors
  • Slow in the first turns

Best for: Value players who want the graveyard as a second hand.

Put useful creatures in the graveyard, not just large ones

A working deck needs ways to fill the graveyard, ways to use it and targets worth recovering. Stitcher's Supplier can help stock it; Victimize exchanges a sacrificed creature for two creature cards returned tapped. Both are black and fit all five commanders above. Don’t include so many expensive targets that you struggle to play before your engine starts.

Graveyard exile is the obvious pressure point. Keep some threats you can cast normally and answers to the cards shutting off your graveyard.

Key cards and synergies for Reanimator

Cards that show up in many Reanimator decks, by the job they do. Which ones fit depends on your commander’s colors.

Filling the graveyard

Reanimation only works once something worth bringing back is down there.

  • Entomb — Puts any card from your library into your graveyard for one mana.
  • Buried Alive — Puts up to three creature cards from your library into your graveyard.
  • Stitcher's Supplier — A one-mana creature that mills three cards when it enters or dies.
  • Faithless Looting — Draws two, discards two, and comes back from the graveyard.

Reanimation spells

Bring a creature back from any graveyard.

  • Animate Dead — Returns a creature from a graveyard for two mana.
  • Reanimate — A single black mana, at the price of life equal to the creature’s mana value.
  • Victimize — Returns two creature cards at once if you sacrifice a creature.
  • Living Death — Swaps the creatures on the battlefield with the ones in every graveyard.

Creatures worth bringing back

Targets that win the game or give back more than they cost.

  • Grave Titan — Deathtouch, and two Zombies when it enters and whenever it attacks.
  • Sun Titan — Returns a permanent with mana value 3 or less when it enters or attacks.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Gives your team haste, trample and +X/+X, where X is the number of your creatures.
  • Eternal Witness — Returns any card from your graveyard to your hand when it enters.

Best budget Reanimator commanders

A budget reanimator deck is realistic: the best recursion engines and many of the strongest targets are inexpensive, and the expensive tutors and fast reanimation spells are nice to have, not required.

Karador, Ghost Chieftain

Karador, Ghost Chieftain

A cost reducer that grows with your graveyard and needs no expensive reanimation spells.

Reanimator Commander FAQ

Is returning a creature the same as casting it?

No. Putting a creature directly onto the battlefield doesn’t trigger abilities that require you to cast it. Karador and Chainer provide casting permissions instead.

How is Reanimator different from Blink?

Reanimator uses creature cards in the graveyard. Blink usually exiles a permanent from the battlefield and returns it, reusing its enters abilities.

What happens if my graveyard gets exiled?

You lose those resources. A backup plan, interaction and cards you can cast from hand help you continue rather than depend entirely on one graveyard.
